General Project Overview
To assess cooperation between the US and Russia during the period 1991-2001, with a special emphasis on the International Space Station (ISS) project (click
here for more on the International Space Station). In doing so, the Institute aims to determine the value of the last ten years of interaction and identify the lessons learned.
There are multiple components to the overall project, each of which represents a different perspective on US-Russian cooperation in space during the last ten years. These include:
Auxiliary studies are then comparing space cooperation with other kinds of US-Russian technical cooperation:
Each component of the project has a primary investigator or team of investigators who collect and analyze data by conducting interviews with primary actors. Each investigator is identifying the important components of cooperation as viewed from the various perspectives, discerning what the successes and failures have been, looking at the reasons for why those successes and failures occurred, and providing a concise analysis of the overall picture. All of the investigations are using the framework of US-Russian relations as their primary point of reference.
After all of the investigations have been completed, the Institute will take the major findings and integrate them into a single document. This document will be accessible to the general public, but will also be used as the basis for briefing opinion-leaders and policymakers on the issues that it addresses.
| Structure and Objectives of the Individual Projects |
Each investigator or group of investigators is conducting research on US-Russian cooperation during the last ten years from a specific national perspective. Through their research and interviews, investigators will determine how the primary actors viewed the relative success of cooperation, the cultural and other challenges that they faced, and the effects of external events. Emphasis is being placed on gathering anecdotal evidence, which is part of a larger effort to depict the nuances of the rich and unique experiences that come from cooperating with international partners. The information derived from individual interviews will be corroborated and amplified with other source materials.
