GERMANY
| First Nuclear Power Plant Opened: | The first unit began operation in 1956. |
| Number and Types of Nuclear Power Plants: | There are currently 17 nuclear power plants operating in Germany (listed below). |
| Percentage of National Energy From Nuclear Power: | 33% |
| Future Nuclear Power Plans: | Since the ascendance of the coalition government in 1998, Germany has repudiated the use of nuclear power, while seeking to gradually phase out its implementation. Accordingly, in 2001, the Red-Green coalition government authored an agreement with Germany's four major utility companies, which prohibited the construction of any new power plants, while limiting the existing plants' lifespan to 32 years on average. Subsequently, in 2003 and 2005, the plants located in Stade and Obrigheim were decommissioned respectively. |
ANALYSIS / ISSUES
Despite Germany's proclamation to rid itself of nuclear power, the projected political realignment, from the incumbent Social Democrats (SPD) to the opposing conservative Christian Democrats in 2006, has both investors and utilities speculating on the resurrection of Germany's nuclear industry . Accordingly, citing both economic and environmental concerns, the Christian Democrats have vowed to overturn Germany's current denuclearization agenda.
