Rachel Rutter is going into her third year at Gettysburg College and plans to graduate in May of 2010. Originally from Lancaster Pennsylvania, Rutter is a double major in English and Spanish.
At Gettysburg College, Rutter founded a student group at titled Students Against Relational Aggression (SARA). SARA helps to raise awareness about relational aggression, the type of covert bullying found among young girls. The group has established six different mentoring programs in Adams County, Pennsylvania. Rutter is also the public relations chair for the Law and Justice Society and active in Gettysburg's chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a co-ed community service fraternity. She volunteers at El Centro, an after-school program for children in Gettysburg.
Next fall, Rutter will study in Salamanca, Spain where she hopes to continue building her language skills and step outside her comfort zone.
The Dwight D. Eisenhower/Conrad Hilton Scholarship is awarded annually to support Gettysburg College seniors or juniors who are planning to study abroad. The goal of this scholarship is to help encourage and assist students who: bring a strong international orientation to their studies; exhibit, through extracurricular activities, an interest and awareness of the role they can perform in bettering the world; and show, through their career aspirations and corresponding curriculum choices, an appreciation of the role that international travel, global trade, and cross-cultural exchange can play in fostering international understanding and world peace.
