Chris Matthews, political commentator and television host, spoke about presidential leadership Nov. 14 at Gettysburg College.
As part of the Eisenhower Institute Campus Speaker Series, the 14th annual Blavatt Lecture, "Presidential Leadership: John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama," featured Matthews, host of MSNBC's "Hardball with Chris Matthews" and NBC's "The Chris Matthews Show."
The lecture began at 8 p.m. in the Ballroom of the College Union Building along West Lincoln Avenue. The lecture was free and open to the public.
Gettysburg College students with ID received a complimentary copy of Matthews' most recent book "Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero."
Matthews has hosted "Hardball," now on MSNBC; NBC Sunday morning's "The Chris Matthews Show"; and a two-hour nightly program on the NBC-owned America's Talking network.
He is also the author of five best-selling books. His newest book, "Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero," due for release in November 2011, brings to bear everything he has learned through a lifetime of observing American politics.
In the 1980s, Matthews was Washington bureau chief for the San Francisco Examiner, covering the fall of the Berlin Wall and the first all-races election in South Africa. He also worked as a Peace Corps volunteer in Africa, as a presidential speechwriter, and as an aide to Speaker of the House Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill, Jr.
Inaugurated in 1996, the Blavatt Lecture Series annually brings to Gettysburg College individuals whose professional experiences provide a unique perspective on the American political system. Previous speakers include former Majority Leader of the United States Senate Tom Daschle, former Majority Leader of the United States House of Representatives Richard Armey, former Democratic presidential candidate and Vermont Governor Howard Dean, New York Times Supreme Court senior correspondent Linda Greenhouse, Newsweek editor Jon Meacham, political commentator Juan Williams, and 1961 Gettysburg College graduate Fred Fielding, counselor to President Reagan and White House counsel to President Bush.
Honoring the legacy of Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Eisenhower Institute is a distinguished center for leadership and public policy that prepares the successor generation to perfect the promise of the nation.
The lecture is made possible by the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Blavatt of Owings Mills, Md. Both of their sons graduated from Gettysburg College, as did their spouses: Jeffrey and Kelly, and Jason and Amy.
