



Major General Michael A. Hamel Discusses Space and
National Security with Eisenhower Institute

On October 25th, 2002 Major General Michael A. Hamel met with staff and program panel members of The Eisenhower Institute's project, The Future of Space: The Next Strategic Frontier, to discuss issues associated with the weaponization of space, the mission of the United States Space Command and its role in national defense and international security. General Hamel is Commander of the14th Air Force and Component Commander, Space Air Forces, US Space Command, Vandenberg Air Force Base.
This gathering was the third in a series of engagements between the Institute and members of the military as part of this project. Brigadier General Simon P. Worden, Vice Director of Operations at US Space Command, kicked off the first meeting of the series, followed by a second gathering of a panel of select junior officers specializing in space. The goal of these meetings is to promote a dialogue between the Institute and the military stakeholders in the future of space. The Institute is also engaging other groups in this project, including industry, scientific and legal communities.
