As the head delegate of South Korea to the 24th annual meeting of the ROK-US Joint Standing Committee on Nuclear Energy Cooperation (JSCNEC), Dr. Cho pointed out that his government has been committed to using atomic energy peacefully ever since it concluded a cooperation agreement with the US in 1956. The Korean Atomic Energy Bureau is responsible for establishing national policies and plans for the development and peaceful use of nuclear energy and nuclear safety.
The major points of discussion during the meeting revolved around the goals of promoting nuclear energy as a major source of electricity generation and developing safe, economical reactors with a proliferation-resistant nuclear fuel cycle. With the 50th anniversary of President Eisenhower's Atoms for Peace speech rapidly approaching, Ms. Eisenhower and Dr. Cho also discussed the possibility of developing a cooperative relationship in the near future between The Institute and its counterpart in South Korea on nuclear energy research issues.
