WASHINGTON, DC, January 29, 2003--The Eisenhower Institute and the Energy Future Coalition (EFC) hosted a roundtable discussion on the future role of nuclear energy in the United States and globally. The roundtable took place at The Institute's offices as part of its "Safeguarding the Atom" project. Participants from the scientific, corporate, environmental, and policy communities sought to engage each other in a discussion on the challenges facing nuclear power as a viable source of renewable energy.
Institute President and EFC Steering Committee member Susan Eisenhower opened the meeting by welcoming the participants and highlighting the importance of nuclear energy as part of any energy future deliberations. Former US Senator Tim Wirth (R-CO), President of the United Nations Foundation, thanked The Institute for hosting the meeting and recognized several members of the audience for their contributions to the study of nuclear power issues, including Eisenhower Institute Senior Associate Roald Sagdeev. Ernest J. Moniz, former Under Secretary of Energy and current co-chair of a nuclear policy review at MIT, and John B. Ritch III, former Ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna and current Director General of the World Nuclear Association, each made presentations. Jeff Seabright of Green Strategies then moderated a question and answer period.
