Author Series Event: Reihan Salam

A Schwartz Fellow at the New America Foundation, Reihan Salam writes on politics, culture, and technology, and was previously an associate editor at The Atlantic, a producer for NBC News, a junior editor and editorial researcher at The New York Times, a research associate at the Council on Foreign Relations, and a reporter-researcher at The New Republic. He is the co-author of Grand New Party: How Conservatives Can Win the Working Class and Save the American Dream.


Blavatt Lecture: Howard Fineman, "Obama: A Progress Report"

Fineman is Newsweek's senior Washington correspondent and columnist. An award-winning writer, Fineman is also an NBC news analyst and his work has appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the New Republic. Fineman's most recent book is entitled The Thirteen American Arguments: Enduring Debates that Inspire and Define Our Country. In this book, he shows that every debate from our nation's founding to the Age of Obama, is rooted in one of the thirteen arguments that, thankfully, defy solution.

Bob Herbert: "Wounded Colossus: Bringing America Back from the Brink"

Bob Herbert is an American print and broadcast journalist. He joined the New York Times as an Op-Ed columnist in 1993. Prior to joining the Times, Herbert was a national correspondent for NBC from 1991 to 1993, reporting regularly on The Today Show and NBC Nightly News. The first event in the Eisenhower Institute's 2009 Fall Speaker Series.

Author Series Book Event: Senator Jim Webb

Senator Jim Webb is the senior senator from Virginia and served as Secretary of the Navy under President Ronald Reagan.   The author of several books-both fiction and non-fiction-Webb's most recent is A Time to Fight: Reclaiming a Fair and Just America.

Gettysburg College political science professor Shirley Anne Warshaw is an authority on the American presidency, the president's Cabinet, and organizational decision structures for presidential policy making.  Her most recent book is "The Co-Presidency of Bush and Cheney."

Joe Postell: The Proper Role of Government in American Society

A discussion organized by Eisenhower Institute Undergraduate Fellow Justin Oliveira that will feature a speaker from the Intercollegiate Studies Institute or the Heritage Foundation.  The discussion will consider the various functions of government in this modern American society, and provide perspectives on the legitimacy of modern governmental institutions.
James Todd: "Presidential Power in War and Emergencies: How much is too much?"

Dr. James Todd, a 1965 Gettysburg alumnus, has taught courses in American government and constitutional law and history for the past twenty-two years, primarily at the University of Arizona where he received their top teaching award in 2002. He recently taught a course on the presidency, civil liberties, and the war on terror at his PhD alma mater, the University of Virginia. Before going back to school for his PhD, he spent eleven years practicing law in Washington, DC.

Former Military Intelligence Officer Dr. Evan Offstein is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and has written the bestselling book, "Stand Your Ground: Building Honorable Leaders the West Point Way." Offstein will meet with Gettysburg student leaders to discuss methods of leading with integrity.

 R. Thomas DeLoe: “Heroes and Villains: The Battle Against Big Tobacco”

DeLoe, a Gettysburg College alum, has worked for 10 years as a Senior Public Health Advisor with the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, an agency under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  He formerly served as director of Public Health Programs for the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
