



Eisenhower Fellowships Roundtable Discussion:
Northeast Asia Regional Program
October 2, 2006
The Eisenhower Institute hosted four members of the Eisenhower Fellowships Northeast Asia Regional Program for a roundtable discussion on October 2, 2006. Each of the fellows was invited to give a short introductory statement detailing his current program and his individual area of expertise. The discussion then touched on numerous issues involving the Northeast Asian region, including US-China economic, political, and military relations; the tension over Taiwan; the threat posed by North Korea; and the continued business developments in Japan and the rest of the region.
Attending the event were representatives from the US-China Education Trust, the White House Fellowship Program, The Cohen Group, Gettysburg College, and other institutions. The four Eisenhower Fellows in attendance included:
Julian Kuo (China-Taiwan): Second term member of the Legislative Yuan. Founder of the Digital Convergence Legislative Association, which aims to liberalize the telecommunications and TV industries. assistant professor of political science, Soochow University (PhD, Yale). Editorial writer for China Times. Fullbright Scholarship to Yale (1990-1992).
Lin Dong (PRChina): Colonel and professor of the National Defense University of the People's Liberation Army. Consults on military policy and strategy with high-level PLA generals (PhD, Military Science Academy). Working to improve Sino-US communications in military affairs.
Chuck Chen Poujian (PRChina): Chairman and CEO of Tianan Insurance Company, Ltd. (Shanghai). Twenty-year career executive. Founded the company, now with 10,000 employees. Prolific writer of business books. PhD, Zhongnan University of Finance and Economics. "Man of the Year - 2005" award in financial/intellectual arena. Researching US financial and insurance markets.
Ken Watanabe (Japan): Director of the International Exhibitions Promotions Office, Ministry of the Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan. Promoting 2010 Shanghai EXPO. Previously, director of International Energy Strategy in the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy. Masters degree in International Relations, Fletcher School, Tufts University: L.L.B., University of Tokyo. Interested in US business strategies towards Asian markets.
