February 9, 2004

On February 9, 2004, Dariga Nazarbayeva (center of photo) visited the Eisenhower Institute in Washington, DC. Nazarbayeva, 41, the eldest daughter of President Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan, is active in regional politics and is regarded by many as a potential heir to her father. The discussion covered a wide range of topics, including U.S.-Kazakhstan relations and regional politics in Central Asia.

Nazarbayeva concentrates on media work in Kazakhstan, where she chairs the Khabar Radio and Television Network and the country's Union of Journalists. She also is chair of the Eurasian Media Forum (EAMF), a Kazakhstan-based international media initiative.

Nazarbayeva recently announced the formation of a political party, Asar (Kazakh for "All Together"). Ten members of the Kazakhstan's Senate and Mejlis, the lower House of the Parliament, joined its ranks in January 2004 to form a parliamentary bloc.
