Katherine Haley Will


Katherine Haley Will is Gettysburg College's 13th president and the first woman to hold the position in the College's 176-year history.

Kate is serving her fourth year as president of Gettysburg College. Formerly the president of Whittier College, Kate was provost and professor of English at Kenyon College, where she served as leader of the college's academic program, faculty, and curriculum.

As a faculty member in Victorian literature, Kate received the Burlington Northern Award for Excellence in Teaching. The author of works on Victorian literature, women's literature, and trends in educational technology, Kate earned her master's and doctoral degrees in English from the University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana.

She studied at Carleton College and completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at Tufts University; Tufts awarded her an honorary doctoral degree in 2002.

In her three plus years as Gettysburg's president, Kate has presided over the completion of the College's new strategic plan, a campus facilities master plan, initiated the move to a 5 course teaching load for faculty, implemented a comprehensive student career networking program, and will soon oversee the construction of the $26M Center for Athletics Recreation and Fitness, approved by the board of trustees in September 2007.

Kate serves on the boards of National Trust for Historic Gettysburg, the Eisenhower Institute, the Lincoln Bicentennial Advisory Council, the Lincoln Prize Board, and the Gettysburg Foundation. She co-chairs the Pennsylvania Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission

In addition, Dr. Will serves as chair the Annapolis Group, the professional organization of the presidents of the nation's leading liberal arts colleges.

Kate and her husband, Oscar Henry Will III Ph.D., have four daughters.
